VISIONING

The Place of Indonesia

Through this interior renovation program, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Los Angeles will showcase Indonesia’s tropical design and art immersive experiences with contemporary urban coastal architecture in this iconic Art Deco building. The interior building renovation program will pay homage to the historic Wilshire corridor, transform itself into a welcoming hub representing Indonesia’s cultural sensibility and design excellence to compliment the role of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in increasing positive relationship between Indonesia and the host country of USA, and particularly with the host city of Los Angeles.

This interior renovation program will continue the work completed on the Ground Floor featuring spatial experiences representing Indonesia’s signature natural wonders and native cultural traditions through a wide array of Indonesian decorative and functional artwork and contemporary California furnishing. The improved space will provide visual opening and connection between spaces, and will create a fluid transition between public service areas, community activity rooms, and diplomatic offices.

UPPER GROUND (FL: 2)
BIODIVERSITY

Showcases Indonesia’s important contribution to global biodiversity, Upper Ground interior spaces utilizes tenun-inspired patterned wall, connecting the spaces with traditional weaving custom of Indonesia including ikat and songket.

_______
Blessed with a tropical climate and around 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a nation with the second largest biodiversity in the world. The archipelago consists of a variety of regions from the tropical rainforests of the northern lowlands and the seasonal forests of the southern lowlands through the hill and mountain vegetation, to sub-alpine shrub vegetation. Having the second longest shoreline in the world, Indonesia also has many regions of swamps and coastal vegetation. Combined together, these all give rise to a huge vegetational biodiversity.

_______
The flora of Indonesia reflects an intermingling of Asian, Australian, and native species. There are about 28,000 species of flowering plants in Indonesia, consisting 2500 different kinds of orchids, 6000 traditional medicinal plants used as Jamu. 122 species of bamboo, over 350 species of rattan and 400 species of Dipterocarpus, including ebony, sandalwood, and teakwood. Indonesia is also home to some unusual species such as carnivorous plants. The two biodiversity hotspots in Indonesia: Sundaland and Wallacea formed the unique bed of landscape in Indonesia. Sundaland, which is located on the west part of the Indonesian archipelago, holds about 25,000 different species of plants. 15,000 of them are endemic to this region and cannot be found anywhere else. Wallacea has about 10,000 species of plants with about 1,200 species and 12 genera are endemic.

_______
During the 16th century, the spice trade powered the global economy. Spices such as nutmeg and cloves, which came from the famed Spice Islands (now the provinces of Maluku and North Maluku in Indonesia), fetched fabulous prices in Europe. Explorers Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Samuel de Champlain, and Henry Hudson all sought routes to the Spice Islands. The search for Indonesian spices thus gave humans their first comprehensive understanding of the geography of the planet.
